hanging lake

When we were planning our trip to the Rocky Mountain National Park, we stumbled across a photo of the prettiest jade-colored lake surrounded by wispy little waterfalls. We knew right away that we wanted to plan this location into our itinerary. After more research we realized the lake was not near the area of Granby where we were staying. So, we blocked off a day and took a road trip to White River National Forest in Glenwood Springs, Colorado to check out the insanely beautiful Hanging Lake.

The couple hour drive was so surreal as we passed through one beautiful landscape after the next. It really gave us a whole different perspective of the beauty that fills Colorado. We passed through valleys, hot springs, grand alpine mountains, crossed over babbling streams and as we approached our destination we found ourselves surrounded by gorgeous canyons.

RESERVATIONS + PERMITS

Hanging Lake is a true gem and a rare example of a travertine geological formation. It was formed by a fault that caused the lake bed to drop away from the valley floor from above. To protect this natural wonder a management plan was put in place to avoid trail damage and overcrowding. Currently, a permit program is in place to help visitors preserve and protect the ecological health of Hanging Lake.  Each hiker requires a reservation to permit hiking at Hanging Lake.
